of events, festivals and concerts
held throughout the year. From
music festivals to fishing competitions,
you will find excellent entertainment in
beautiful settings, with the friendly and
relaxed atmosphere Waiheke is famous
for. As the year progresses, community
fundraisers emerge on the calendar
involving the huge array of talented
musicians and performers resident on the
island – often with spectacular results.
Fullers Wharf to Wharf Fun Run. This is
a long established event involving a run or
walk from Orapiu to Matiatia. Organised
by Waiheke Rotary. wharf2wharf.co .nz
Rocky Bay Regetta. This iconic annual
family fun day in Rocky Bay offers non-
stop races and competitions including
sailing, kayaking, swimming and beach
races for all age groups. Get a real sense
of the Waiheke Island community at this
Headland – Sculpture on the Gulf.
This free biennial sculpture exhibition
features site-specific works along the
stunning Church Bay walkway and is
known as New Zealand’s premier outdoor
sculpture exhibition. The event runs for
three weeks. The next one will be in 2015.

Waitangi Day. Piritahi Marae in
Blackpool usually puts on a family day of
entertainment and a traditional hangi on
February 6, with everyone welcome to
Onetangi Beach Races. An iconic
Waiheke event involving horse, waiter
and tractor racing, sandcastle building
competitions, “Fashion in the Field” and
children’s “Mad Hatters” competition and
other attractions. Organised by Waiheke

Teddy Bears’ Picnic. Oneroa beach –
fun for the little ones. Usually on World
Children’s Day. Check your Waiheke
Marketplace for details.
King of the Bay Fishing Competition.
The island’s big fishing competition of
the year, organised by Waiheke Rotary.
Cash prizes for the biggest snapper, other
species, average weight, heaviest child’s
fish and ladies’ fish. Weigh in, prizes
and fresh fish sale. Check your Waiheke
Marketplace newspaper for details.
Waiheke Island International Jazz
Festival. This festival is always a
drawcard and features the popular Good
Friday Groove at Rangihoua Estate. It will
be over Easter weekend, April 18 to 20.

The next biennial Festival of Story
will be in 2014 over Queen’s Birthday
weekend. Join international storyteller
Tanya Batt and her group of amazing
entertainers for a holiday treat.
Labour Weekend. There is always live
music and entertainment on Waiheke over
Labour Weekend. Check your Waiheke
Marketplace for details.
Waiheke Walking Festival. Usually
starts the last weekend in October
and runs for nine days. Check out
Words on a Small Island – Waiheke
Book Festival. This feast of literary
events usually takes place at the end of
October or the beginning of November.
Waiheke Island Garden Safari. Every
spring, people flock to Waiheke to take
a peep at some of the island’s most
gorgeous, private gardens. The self
drive safari is every second weekend
in November, and offers a great way to
see spectacular scenery, gardens and
outdoor art. The two day event is the main
fundraiser for the Jassy Dean Trust which
helps sick Waiheke children and their
families.The trust’s Waiheke Art in the
Garden and a huge plant sale also raise
funds for the trust as part of the event. Go

Waiheke Olive and Artisan Food
Festival. Spend a weekend on the island
tasting a multitude of olive products,
Waiheke wines and artisan food. Laze
in the grounds of Rangihoua Estate
and listen to the live music. The popular
festival usually runs the last weekend

Christmas Festival. Community groups
and businesses celebrate Santa in
Carols by the Sea. Christmas on
Waiheke is symbolised by the Carols by
Candlelight event held on Little Oneroa
Beach Reserve. Carols and songs are led
by Waiheke musicians.
